The Boy Scouts of America

The Boy Scout organization was started in England at the turn of the century by a British General, General Sr. Robert Lord Baden Powell, who fought in the Boer Wars in Africa.  The program became very popular and was brought to this country in 1910 by William D. Boyce, a Plum native, who went on to become a Chicago publisher.  It was later chartered by Congress.  A number of youth programs prevalent at the time joined together and became known as the Boy Scouts of America.

The purpose of the movement is to instill in youth the kindred virtues of citizenship, physical fitness, and character development.  The Scout Oath is "On my honor I'll do my best to do my duty to God and my Country, to keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight."  The Scout Motto is "Be Prepared."  The Scout Pledge is "Do a Good Turn Daily" and the Scout Law is "A Scout is: Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Courteous, Kind, Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty, Brave, Clean, and Reverent."

Troop 390 meets each Monday in the meeting room on the lower floor of the St. Joseph Parish Center at 6:30PM when not otherwise in the field.  We participate in a long-term camp once each year at Heritage Reservation.  We utilize Camp Gayest for weekend camping and other places as well.

Boys ages 10 1/2 and are in the 5th grade and have not reached their 18th birthday are eligible to become members.

We participate in both the Boy Scout Programs as well as the Religious programs of both Catholic and other denominations.

Interested parties please call the Parish Office.
