Investiture as
Protonotary Apostolic of Rt. Reverend Monsignor Henry F. Hanse,
V.F.
Article in the Daily Dispatch from May 5, 1966:
2 NK Priests are Honored
"Two New Kensington priests have been honored by Pope Paul VI and have
been named Protonotaries Apostolic.
The Rt. Rev. Msgr. Nicola L. Fusco, pastor of Mount St. Peter Church, and
the Rt. Rev. Msgr. Henry F. Hanse, pastor of St. Joseph Church, were
informed the appointments become effective immediately.
Selection of this dignity is considered, next to the appointment as
bishop, the highest church honor a priest may obtain.
As protonotary apostolic a priest is permitted on solemn occasions to wear
a jeweled ring similar to that of a bishop. In the celebration of
Mass on greater feasts he may wear certain vestments and follow ceremonial
forms ordinarily reserved for bishops.
The Most Rev. William Connare, bishop of the Greensburg diocese, made the
announcement.
Previously both priests had been named Domestic Prelates in the papal
household with the title of Right Reverend Monsignor. Monsignor is a
title of distinction granted to certain members of the clergy as a mark of
papal recognition of their services to the church.
Monsignori are of three classes in the United States: Protonotary
Apostolic and Domestic Prelates whose titles are Right Reverend, and Papal
Chamberlain, who's title is Very Reverend.
Msgr. Fusco was born in Italy and ordained in 1912 by Bishop Canevin at
St. Vincent, Latrobe. He was named Domestic Prelate in 1959 and is
chairman of the Diocesan Commission on Christian Unity.
Msgr. Hanse was born in Mount Pleasant and ordained in 1923 by Bishop
Boyle at St. Vincent. He was named Domestic Prelate in 1959 and
Vicar General of the Greensburg Diocese last year."
"O Lord, we place on the head of your prelate and champion
the helmet of defense and salvation, so that, his face being adorned and
his head armed with the protection of both Testaments, he may appear
formidable to the opponents of truth, and through the rich gift of Your
grace may be their sturdy adversary..." With these words, the Rt.
Rev. Msgr. Henry F. Hanse had a mitre placed on his bowed head at his
investiture as Protonotary Apostolic.

What is a
protonotary?
One of the chief groups of prelates of the Roman Catholic Church.
(Prelate: An ecclesiastical authority who either has jurisdiction by his
office--for example, a bishop--or one who is an honorary prelate, because
of service to the Church. There do not have jurisdiction or any
special duties.)
The protonotary apostolic office goes back to the 3rd or 4th
Century. They were originally notaries in the Church and performed
legal functions, such as visitations, investigations, drawing up the
official apostolic letters. By the 18th Century, the custom arose of
naming honorary protonotaries, while those actually carrying out the
office numbered seven.
Currently there are the following kinds:
-
Those actually carrying out the office--seven in
number. They have officially fixed duties.
-
Supernumerary--there are honorary officials who are canons
of the patriarchal basilicas.
-
Ad instar participantium (Just as those participating)
--Also honorary and conferred upon other individuals for titular
honoraries, but they are not officially members of the pontifical
family. These do not use the pontifical privileges.
The honor conferred upon Monsignor Hanse and Monsignor Fusco is the
honorary protonotary apostolic ad instar participantium. This
means they are entitled to bear the initials "P.A." after their names, and
they are also allowed to wear certain pontifical vestments in liturgical
functions, as specified by the decree giving them this honor, as well as
the local bishop. For example, in these ceremonies they can wear a
ring, a mitre, pontifical gloves and shoes.
